Being prepared - Are you ready for fireworks?

Fireworks will come around very quickly, and with over 50% of our canine friends reported as having a fear of fireworks¹, it is important to focus on preparing my dog for fireworks night in order to help them.

Why fireworks preparation starts earlier than you think.

Fireworks season doesn't begin on the 5th of November — for anxious dogs, it begins the moment the first distant bang echoes across the neighbourhood. In many areas, the main period runs from late October through early November - Halloween, Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year's Eve, and increasingly frequent private displays mean that noise anxiety is one of the most common and distressing experiences for dogs in the UK.

That means preparing my dog for fireworks night should begin weeks in advance, not the day before. With the right fireworks preparation for dogs and a structured approach, you can significantly reduce your dog's stress — and your own.

Your Seasonal Fireworks Preparation Timeline

4 WEEKs BEFORE BONFIRE NIGHT (Early October)

This is your action window— the most important phase that most dog owners miss entirely. It’s the ideal time to begin preparing my dog for fireworks night.

What to do:

2 WEEKs BEFORE BONFIRE NIGHT (Late October)

What to do:

• Gradually increase the volume of your desensitisation sound sessions.

1 WEEK BEFORE BONFIRE NIGHT (Late October/Early November)

What to do:

• Close all windows, curtains, and cat flaps from late afternoon to make your home calm during fireworks.
• Turn on the TV or radio to provide background noise that masks bangs.
• Stay home if possible - your presence is genuinely reassuring to your dog; keep your dog indoors during fireworks unless for short, supervised toilet breaks.
• Do not punish fearful behaviour - whimpering, hiding, or trembling is your dog communicating distress.
• Do comfort your dog if they want it - the outdated advice that comforting reinforces fear has been widely debunked. Reassurance helps if that is what your dog is used to.

THE WEEK AFTER BONFIRE NIGHT (6th–12th November)

What to do:

• Don't relax too soon - private fireworks displays often continue for 1–2 weeks after the 5th.
